Lawn problems
Lawn aeration constitutes two things, controlling lawn thatch and reducing soil compaction. Lawn thatch is a layer of dead organic tissue that deprives the lawn from much-needed oxygen. Soil compaction makes it difficult for grass to root and it disturbs positive rainwater irrigation, therefore it is meaningful to aerate the lawn. This is especially meaningful for highly trafficked lawns. If people walk or even run over a lawn, the pressure generates compaction in the soil. When aerating very dense soil, it will ease the process when the lawn is watered the night before aeration.
Types of aerator
There are two types of lawn aerators. There is the type that uses spikes to punch holes in the soil and there is the type that pulls out plugs of soil, also known as a core aerator due to the cores of soil removed. The latter is preferred if compaction is a problem, because while the spike punching lawn aerator only provides paths for air to contact the soil, the lawn aerator that pulls out soil also reduces compaction. For hobbyist lawn maintainers, there are also spiked shoes that can be used to aerate a lawn, these are much more affordable than larger lawn aerating machines. But these spikes, like the spike punching aerator, without doubt increase compaction by compressing the soil as the spike enters. This may be an acceptable result if aeration is the primary goal and compaction is not a problem.
Types of lawngrass
There are thousands of varieties of lawngrass, each adapted to specific conditions of precipitation, temperature, and sun/shade tolerance. Breeders are constantly creating new and improved varieties of the base list of lawngrass species. The two basic categories are cool season grasses and warm season grasses.
Cool season grasses start growth at 5 ?C, and grows at their fastest rate when temperatures are between 10-25 ?C (Huxley 1992), in climates that have relatively mild/cool summers, with two periods of fast growth in the spring and autumn. They retain their color well in extreme cold and normally grow very dense, carpetlike lawns with relatively little thatch.
Warm season grasses only start growth at temperatures above 10 ?C, and grow fastest when temperatures are between 25 ?C and 35 ?C, with one long growth period over the spring and summer (Huxley 1992). They most often go dormant in cooler months, turning shades of tan or brown. A few warm season grasses are quite drought tolerant, and can handle very high summer temperatures, although temperatures below -15 ?C can kill most warm season grasses.

1) Please tell us about how you entered sales and marketing?
“I started my sales career in Mumbai, India where I first started selling Standard Chartered credit cards in the year 2001 and I worked for Impact Marketing, Direct Sales Agents for Standard Chartered Bank.”
2) Tell us about your first customer
“It was a job which involved cold calling and I was very nervous knowing that I will have to walk in someone’s office for the first time even though they had never seen me before and I am going there to sell them a credit card”.
3) How was the experience of walking in a stranger’s office?
“It was terrible, I was shivering and nervous and my Manager who was training me had to accompany me in his office. I was running out of words. That customer did not buy from me”.
4) What happened next?
“It was the first time I had to deal with failure and I was really finding it difficult to deal with but the positive outcome was I started thinking, what went wrong and then I started working on my sales and marketing strategies”.
5) Did you want to quit?
“I had a never say die attitude and I was always stubborn, I decided to learn everything about sales and marketing”.
6) Did you get any success from that job and experience of cold calling?
“Absolutely, within the next 6 months, I was one of their best salesman but not the best”.
7) Wow, what a transformation, how did you manage that?
“I watched everybody, how they use their sales pitch, involve the customer with themselves in a conversation, the art of convincing and closing the sale”.
8) How long did you work for them?
“Not very long, as I got an better offer from Andromedia Marketing, Direct Sales Agents for Citibank and this time I was selling Citibank credit cards”.
9) How was your experience with Andromedia Marketing?
“I was good but unfortunately I did not stay with them for a long time as I became a part of Esscom Marketing, Direct Sales Agents for ICICI Bank”.
10) Why did you keep changing your jobs?
“Good question, Mumbai is a big city but all agencies keep an eye on the field salesmen and each company tries to get the best salesman in their organisation for better results in more sales, I was a victim too”.
11) How long it took you to be spotted by these agencies?
“Three Years, By this time I was good at selling sand to the Arabs”.
12) What was the next phase in your career with sales and marketing?
“Most of my family is settled in the Middle East, but as an individual I wanted to explore the Western World such as United Kingdom, United States of America, Canada etc. I kept reading the newspaper, Mid-Day especially on a Wednesday where you would find thousands of classifieds and see the jobs available abroad. It is because of this newspaper I found a job in Ocho-Rios, Jamaica, West Indies. This was a high end jewellery store, House of Diamonds with a couple of stores very close to the cruise ship pier and they were looking for a Manager who had some experience in sales and marketing”.
13) Please tell us about your experience in Jamaica?
“I worked in Jamaica for three years from 5th Apr 2004 to 11th July 2007”. Since this was a high end jewellery store, I had a lot of difficulties for the first six months”. The biggest problem was the cultural difference between India and Jamaica, language, lifestyle and me not knowing anything about jewellery”.
14) How did you manage working in such difficult conditions?
“During the first six months, I was learning everything about diamonds, gemstones, watches, gold, carat weight, colour, cut etc. I read books about diamonds and gemstones which my boss gave me and I kept reading that book till late in the nights because our store was very close to the cruise ship pier and next day we would have passengers coming on a cruise ship”.
15) Tell us about your first customer in Jamaica?
“A lady walked in the store for the first time, from the cruise ship and I did not want to speak to her as I did not know what to say, my boss asked me to speak to her, she wanted an everyday watch and I was showing her some Skagen watches and she liked one but did not buy because the crystals were inside the glass and not on the outside and she left the store, this is where the story of the champion salesman begins. My boss asked me the reason of that lady not buying the watch. I said the crystals and he was actually listening to my conversation with that lady and he said you could have said, the company does not do crystals on the outside anymore as people complaining of them coming off and they end up losing the crystals, that was an eye opener”.
16) Tell us more about your experience in Jamaica?
“Well there were some other obstacles that I needed to overcome. One of them was the geographical knowledge about United States of America. I have never been there. In sales general knowledge always helps. Let me give you some examples, if someone says Illinois, I said Chicago. If someone says Maryland, I said Baltimore. If someone says Texas, I said Austin. If someone says Kentucky, I said fried chicken. I read and studied the Atlas to get some general idea about United States of America and was trying to familiarise myself with different states, towns, counties, their specialities and if someone said Mid-West, what they were referring to?”
17) What was the major difference between selling Jamaica & Mumbai?
“Fantastic question, when I was in Mumbai, the job involved cold calling that means the salesperson approaching the suspects and it was a process of converting those suspects into prospects. In Jamaica, it was the other way around. I was in the store behind the counters and the passengers from the cruise ship approached me. Sales is like cars, surprised, let me explain please. You need to change gears according to product, service, concept, customer and various situations”.
18) Very interesting, tell us more about Jamaica?
“The company hired four boys from Mumbai, I was one of them. There were local Jamaican girls working in the store and the bosses who were brothers were always on the sales floor. They were the best salespeople, I have ever seen in my life. What makes me say that, I have seen them sell jewellery worth $98,000 to someone who has never seen them before and in fact has landed for the first time in Jamaica. I learnt a lot from them”.
19) How was your career progressing in Jamaica?
“Well I worked in Jamaica for just over three years, the first year was the learning process, the second year I was confident and the third year, I was the best salesman in that shopping mall, Taj Mahal Plaza as there were another 14 jewellery stores in the same mall and the competition was fierce. The other store managers and owners knew that once I start speaking to a customer, I will close the sale”.
20) What made you a champion salesman?
“Desire to win, learn, perform and show my colleagues what I am capable of on the sales floor and as actions speak louder than words, I was always in action”.
21) Can you remember some sales that you made in Jamaica?
“Absolutely, here is one example. On a Saturday morning, a couple was wandering around the mall. There was no cruise ship on that particular day. This couple walks inside my shop and bought a pair of plain gold earrings worth $50.00 US Dollars. I asked for $55.00 and they were bargaining for $5.00 US Dollars. What happened next was History. I then started showing a bracelet to the same lady, she liked it and was resistant to buy it which was $7,000 US Dollars. The man asked the lady if she likes it. She said yes. Immediately I commented, I have never seen that bracelet look so good on anybody ever. He gave me his credit card. I was shocked and surprised. The man was a president of some big organisation in Madison, Wisconsin. Since they were coming from the beach, they were wearing beach wear. So you never know, who you talking to and I wanted to learn more about people’s appearances”.
22) Was there a time you were not comfortable selling in Jamaica?
“This is going to make you laugh, when I landed in Jamaica, we had only one line of Skagen watches from Denmark which range from $50.00 USD to $150.00 USD. But the owner wanted to get high end watches. In the next few months after visiting the Basel show in Switzerland, he acquired some new watch lines such as Bertolucci, Maurice Lacroix, Paul Picot, Elini, Perrellet, Chase-Durer, Wenger etc. When I was a kid, I use to take my Casio watch to the watch guy to repair it and these lines, the watches ranged from $250.00 USD to $35,000 USD.
We received the watches and displayed them in the counter and went home. We had an company accommodation where all four Managers lived in separate rooms. After we had dinner, we had a little conversation. What you must say to the customer to convince him to buy these expensive watches. I had no clue about watches and this time my boss gave the Swiss Watch Manual with almost 500 pages. What this book was about, the history of different watch companies, their manufacturing process and location, their models, numbers, brand ambassadors etc.
In the next few months I was the watch encyclopaedia. I was selling Maurice Lacroix as if there was no tomorrow and Roger Federer was the brand ambassador for Maurice Lacroix those days. I sold a Perrellet watch to someone who came in asking for a Rolex. I sold him Perellet and he had never heard of it before and this watch was 18kt gold and worth $15,000 US Dollars. The customer wanted to spend 6k and I end up making him spend 15k. He was the owner of a golf course in Boston, M.A”. I was gifted an Elini watch worth $1200 US Dollars by the company for being the best salesperson in the Caribbean for their line and I was also regarded as the best Maurice Lacroix salesman in the Caribbean”.

“To be honest, watches but I sold diamonds as well. My highest sale for one diamond ring is $30,000 US Dollars”.
25) Amazing, tell us about that sale please?
Again there was no cruise ship on this day, this couple had come from Royal Plantations resort in Jamaica and I knew only rich people can afford to stay there, so I started showing a very expensive diamond ring to this lady and she fell in love with it. I asked her to walk outside the shop and see the ring in the sunlight as diamond needs light to dazzle and sparkle. She said are you sure, I said absolutely, please go ahead. She went out with her man and came back after 20 seconds. I was waiting with my heart in my mouth but this was a risk I had to take. She came back and then I asked her to see the ring in the mirror. It just blinded her as it was a special diamond cut by Lazare Diamond company and it weighed approx. 2.10 cts and the colour and clarity was F, VS1.
One can buy a ring like that for approx. $15,000 US Dollars with it but will have a couple of carbon spots on the diamond which takes away the beauty and this one was absolutely flawless. The lady likes it, now it all comes down to the man because he is buying. I offered him a beer and he gladly accepted it. I always followed the basic rule, praise the lady and tease the man. I said she is a very beautiful lady. He smiled and asked how much is the ring, I said $33,000 US Dollars and honestly I was not expecting him to buy it. He gave me his Black American Express credit card and politely asked, can you make it 30k please? I said yes but was shivering as this was my highest sale and my boss helped me get over it”.
26) What happened after Jamaica?
“I decided to work at Sea for Harding Brothers Ltd, based in Bristol, on the cruise ship, Ocean Village 2. Here my highest sale was £5300.00 Pounds to an old couple. I know you want to know the whole story about this sale”.
“Well our weekly target was £21,000 Pounds and we had done only £15,000 Pounds in that particular week, my manager who was a girl from New Zealand comes to me and says, Max you need to do something and I said the shops are closed and it is 11.00 pm. What can I do? The shops were open from 5.00 pm to 11.00 pm and the doors were shut.
This couple wanted to see me. They had seen me earlier in the week and I was showing them a three stone diamond ring. They come after the doors were shut and we were closed. I opened the doors and sold them a ring. This man was old and he said I am going to die soon and I asked why what happened? He said it was because of asbestos. I felt very sorry for him and asked him how many children he had? He replied three daughters and as I was showing them a three stone diamond ring, I said one for each daughter. That is it. He bought the ring. Sometimes you have to associate sentiments with purchase and people buy jewellery to celebrate anniversaries, birthdays, special occasions etc”.
27) How was the pressure of being a champion salesman?
“It was tough because every time I would speak to a customer, good results were expected and I needed to be consistent with my figures as I did $100,000 US Dollars every single month as we had an excel sheet with all the names and sales figures. I always wanted to lead. People at times said, Max can begin the conversation but not close the sale. I came up with a trick. My hobby was collecting police officers and firemen’s patches. I asked every customer to send me one patch from their town and in return I would give them a special price. This worked and in no time, I had one patch from every town of United States of America and I got a lot of sales”.

“That is easy, product, service and concept selling”.

“All three but in all honesty I have sold everything and my experience says it is concept selling because there is no product or service but plain dreams that you are selling such as Time Share”.

“Very good question, smart, cunning, instant, one that can overcome obstacles with a smile, good with words, one that has good general knowledge, product knowledge and one that can maintain constant eye contact, one who can understand the customer needs, knows competition etc”.

“I was in Jamaica and was showing a ring to a lady and she asked if this diamond was blood free because it was during this time that the movie came out, Blood Diamond. I told her it was blood free because the movie had just come out and this diamond was found a year ago. Does not make a lot of sense but it did the trick and closed the sale for $5,000 US Dollars”.

“Ask open and closed questions, such as would you like a beer or brandy? The person is forced to pick one of the two. That means the salesperson is in the Driver’s seat. These questions help the salesman determine which way the customer is heading towards. Also you need to make the customer talk and the salesperson should know what the customer wants to hear”.

“There is a trick to break the ice and make the customer talk, you can simply break the ice by talking about profession, hobbies, culture, country, locations, sports, latest news and events etc. Hence a good salesperson needs to know what is going around in the world. For instance if the customer is from United States of America you will now talk about Barrack Obama or if the customer is from United Kingdom, Alan Sugar or X-Factor would be a good talk”.

“Very easy, expressions, looks and movements of the body.

Tennis Court Racketeers
Tennis is a great sport, but not without a few foibles. Tennis was a game I remember playing from a very young age. Not really sure, what prompted me to pick up the game, but my younger brother and I use to head over to the local public tennis courts quite a few times during our summer vacation. Quite a few very competitive matches ensued during those long summer days, and a number of them evolved into some very competitive and verbal matches. Ala John Mcenroe vs Jimmy Conners kinda stuff. Not the same tennis skill level of course, but some of the tennis style disagreements certainly did. There are a few things that are kind of annoying about the game of tennis, especially whey you play at the very beginning skill level. One has to be learning to hit a decent tennis serve. Certainly tricky, hitting the ball with just the right power to get it over the next, and still land it in that itty bitty little square of a service box. Certainly makes you look in awe at the tennis pros, as they pound the tennis balls at over 100 miles per hour just barely over the net, and paint the lines of the service box. Of course thousands of hours with a tennis racket in your hands hitting balls till there are callouses on your callouses helps develop a great tennis serve.
Tennis Serving Wenches
The other thing that kind of annoys me about tennis, is all the time spent chasing errant balls. All those tennis shots, that should have been great, but somehow ended up flying over the fence, orwhacking the guy two courts over, or the really sneaking ones that zipped out under the hole in the fence into the big bunch of bushes. I think every tennis court, public or otherwise, should come with a full time staff of ball boys or ball girls. I love watching those kids on the big televised matches running around fetching balls, handing out towels, at the beck and call of the players. As I’ve gotten older, and hadchildren, I’ve tried to encourage them to take up the fine and honorable of career of tennis ball girls, but to no avail. There must be something about chasing all my wild tennis shots, that just doesn’t appeal to youngsters these days.
Tennis Graduation Days
I don’t play a whole lot of tennis these days. Occasionally I’ll play with friends and family while on vacation, or at resorts that have tennis courts available. I’ve taken up other racket sport activities. Played racquetball for a while before moving on to the game of squash. There is something to be said for playing in a court with no net, and no chance of the ball slipping under or over the fence. Helps to save my energy for running down my opponents shots, instead of traipsing through a pack of bushes look for that pink tennis ball, that should be oh so easy to find. Although, I’d have to thank my early days on the tennis courts to develop my affinity for other racket sports. Their all fun in their own way, a great game to play with family, and quite a racket.

Nike’s world headquarters are surrounded by the city of Beaverton, Oregon but are technically within unincorporated Washington County.
From Nike’s perspective, the company, one of only two Fortune 500 employers still headquartered in the state of Oregon (Precision Castparts is the other), has such a large payroll, that it should not be annexed to Beaverton without its consent. Nike prefers to work with the Washington County Government as it develops and expands its headquarters. Annexation would cost the company $700,000 per year in increased taxes for services it already receives from the county and various special-purpose districts.
From Beaverton’s perspective, the company’s expectation for special treatment is counter to the city’s desire to have zoning and other laws apply equally to all businesses, big and small. A nearby Costco store, one of that company’s earliest, was annexed into Beaverton years ago without incident, and Beaverton’s focus on additional annexation during the 21st century reflects a desire to streamline both city and county government by having metropolitan-area services handled by cities instead of counties.
The Oregonian dates the bad blood between the two back to the Nike purchase of 74 acres of nearby Beaverton land which soon fronted the Jared Co-operation. When Nike proposed expanding their headquarters in that direction, Beaverton at first wanted them to build housing near the MAX station and criss-cross the property with two public roads, expectations defined by the zoning already in place when Nike bought the land. Beaverton’s request was mostly consistent with Metro’s transit-oriented development plans for the region. After a year, which included a threat by Nike to move 5,000 jobs out of the state, Beaverton backed down from the requirement for housing, but the lack of accommodation was something that Nike did not forget.
The annexation standoff soon led Beaverton to attempt a forcible annexation. That led to a lawsuit by Nike, and lobbying by the company that ultimately ended in Oregon Senate Bill 887 of 2005. Under that bill’s terms, Beaverton is specifically barred from forcibly annexing the land that Nike and Columbia Sportswear occupy in unincorporated Washington County for 35 years, while Electro Scientific Industries and Tektronix get that same protection for 30 years.

Days where everything that could go wrong, somehow does.
Every sales call ends in a “no.” Every meeting goes wrong, and it always seems to be your fault. Even your best clients, closest friends or family members suddenly seem like they’re no longer on your side.
No one can control when a bad day will decide to come along and make our lives miserable. What we can control is how we choose to respond when it does happen.
Do we make a bad day worse by indulging in negative self-talk? Take out our frustration on everyone around us? Try to make ourselves feel better by chain-smoking, binging on chocolate cake or shopping for a new pair of shoes?
Or do we decide to use these “character building days” as an opportunity to take action, and make a real change in our behaviors that could help us improve our performance, achieve our goals – or simply enjoy life more?
Take care of yourself so you can take care of the problem
Society teaches us to be strong, keep a stiff upper lip and never let them see you sweat.
The only problem is, if you go through life denying your negative emotions, you also run the risk of becoming numb to all the good things in your life. Before you know it, you’re walking around in a trance, completely unaware of how you feel or what you are experiencing.
There’s an important difference between owning your negative feelings and dwelling on them. Feelings are energy. The more you deny them, the more they will push for recognition.
It’s okay to feel helpless, unloved, depressed, lonely, insecure, afraid, confused or lost. Everyone has these feelings from time to time.
By giving yourself permission to acknowledge this fact, you release yourself from the pressure to be perfect that can lead to long-term problems like depression, illness or anger.
Plus, by freeing yourself from the negative tension, you’ll be much better equipped to consider your challenge objectively and come up with an effective solution to resolve it.

The first thing to do on days when you’re feeling overwhelmed by work, the weather, your family – or just by life – is to admit to yourself that your day is spiraling out of your control, and that you are likely not in a resourceful or beneficial state of mind.
I call this ability to recognize the early warning signs of burnout the “skill of awareness.” Once you’re aware that, Houston, you may have a problem, you need to do for yourself what you’d be only too willing to do for others: give yourself permission to create an emotional foxhole and retreat from the world for a short time to regroup.
My advice is to do something proactive and nurturing.
Go to the movies. Read a favorite book. Listen to uplifting music or a CD program that reminds you of your personal power. Go for a workout, go fishing, take a bubble bath, meditate, garden, take a nice, long walk – whatever will make you feel happy, relieve a little stress and put you in a more positive state of mind.
I’d also like to share with you a few of the ways I’ve learned over the years to deal with those down days. Just remember – don’t take what I have to say verbatim. These are my “adult Linus’ blankets,” not yours. Instead, use these tips as a starting point, and then mold and shape them to suit your own personality and needs.
The important thing is to give yourself permission to acknowledge that you are experiencing a difficult time in your life. Then do something proactive to change your perception and help alleviate the stress you’re experiencing.
Five positive ways to deal with “Character Building Days”
1. Go to a quiet, peaceful place where you can be alone. If you can’t physically get away, try imagining yourself in your favorite place in the world, your personal mental Shangri-la – under a forest canopy of trees, canoeing in a crystal-clear lake, on top of a spectacular mountain peak or walking along a gentle shoreline. The University of Delaware has done studies proving that imagining a quiet, natural scene in your mind can significantly reduce your stress in the real world.
2. Take a deep breath. Breathing deeply several times can help slow your heartbeat, lower your blood pressure and allow you to feel in control again. Breathing is also an effective form of muscle relaxation.
3. Replace negative self-talk with a more reassuring and positive internal dialogue. Much of the stress we feel is a result of our own thoughts telling us how worthless, undeserving or unsuccessful we are. The good news is, if we can think ourselves into a stressful state, then we can also think ourselves into a feeling of relaxation. Some useful declarations to tell yourself are:
· “I am calm and cool under all circumstances;”
· “I am in control of my life;”
· “I can let go and relax;”
· “I am in control of all my thoughts and actions;”
· “I am effective and efficient in stressful situations;”
· “I love and honor myself;” and
· “I have a positive attitude and can handle myself in all situations.”
4. Give yourself a reward. This can be anything that helps you feel that you are special! And always keep in mind that the one good thing about bad days is that they don’t last. Don’t let your state of mind control you. Love yourself, and remember that this, too, shall pass.
5. Be grateful for what is good in your life right now. There is nothing like a little gratitude to help remind you that, no matter how bad your day is right now, you have far too many positive things in your life to let it get you down forever.
Always look on the bright side of life…
If there’s one universal, undeniable truth I’ve learned in my career, it’s this: what you focus on expands. So be conscious enough to focus on the blessings you have instead of the negatives.
The truth is, no matter how badly your day is going, there are millions of people around the world who would consider you one of the luckiest people on earth.
Whether you choose to go looking for the good things in your life or the bad, the one thing I can guarantee is that you’re going to find them. It’s up to you to decide which aspects of your life you want to seek out today.

Don’t Let a Stress Fracture Finish Your Marathon
It’s a sunny afternoon, and Kendra is out for a run. Not a long run, just a few miles at a moderate pace. She has been training religiously after work on the River Walk. The serenity of the sound of her stride on the boardwalk, the wind off the river. is the perfect way to melt away the stress of work and think about her upcoming marathon. Kendra visualized the finish line, picturing clocking in just ahead of her goal time, getting that medal, and all of her hard work paid off. Suddenly her fantasies are cut short by a vague ache in her left foot. It seems in perfect cadence with the sound of that foot hitting the boardwalk. She wonders what happened. It doesn’t seem that bad though, so she completes her run.
The next day, she gets out of the shower and notices that her left foot looks a little swollen. There is a hint of color on the top of her foot, not quite a bruise. She starts to worry. Later that day she has another run planned. But by the end of the day, she finds herself taking her left shoe off at her desk. She wonders why it aches whenever she walks down the hall. That evening, after work she heads out for a run, but the aching turns into a throbbing pain only a mile into the run. She turns around and runs back to the car, wondering if she will have to cancel the hotel room and try to get a partial refund for the entry fee.
This is the classic story of a stress fracture. They happen with all kinds of athletes ranging from pathologically over-trained gymnasts to casual runners. The reason is simple. The amount of stress applied exceeds the body’s ability to withstand the load. And something has to give.
Physics geeks know all about Wolf’s Law. This law states that when the load applied to a particular bone increases, the external cortical (load-bearing) portion of the bone becomes thicker and stronger as a result. In short, the bone will remodel itself over time, becoming stronger and better able to resist that sort of stress. This increases the bone’s capacity to withstand longer and longer runs throughout a period of distance run training. It is also the rationale behind weight-training, and other exercise programs to fight the gradual bone-loss associated with osteoporosis. This of course is a good thing. However, it is possible for this to backfire. And when it does, a stress fracture will result.
When someone comes in to my office with a stress fracture, they usually have some vague pain in the top of the mid-foot, but can’t seem to pinpoint the discomfort. They have some swelling, but not a great deal. They seem to remember some bruising, but only when prodded. They usually don’t connect the bruising with the onset of pain. They do always seem to discern that running makes it significantly worse. Interestingly, they have also continued to run on it anyway.
Some are smarter than others, and some are tougher than others. I see the full range. The sensible ones come in after only a few aching runs, and having noted some swelling that seems to get worse walking around at work. Some people run until they can barely walk. I had one of theses hobble in after running on it for eight weeks. It was a mess. After some creative surgery and a bone stimulator he is almost back in action, yet the season is all but over. However, it does not have to be that way.
Stress fractures are prevented, first and foremost, by sensible training. Your bones must have the right combination of load (gradually increasing long runs), rest (including light days and adequate sleep), and good nutrition in order for Wolf’s Law to prevail. Otherwise your body cannot increase the strength of the bones fast enough to stave off the tiny little crack in the bone that is a stress fracture.
When a stress fracture first occurs, (like in Kendra’s case) the crack is not even visible on X-Ray. It can take 4-10 weeks for it to actually show up. If however you continue to run, all of that pounding causes the tiny little crack to become a big crack and then fracture all the way through. This leads to two pieces of bone that may or may not want to get together again. This is clearly visible on X-Ray, but not good. This can lead to surgery (which by the way, is lots of fun for me, but not so much for the patient).
Characteristics that are proven risk factors for stress fractures include high arches, being of female gender, having a wider pelvis, and a limb length discrepancy (meaning one leg is longer than the other). You can increase this risk by running only one side of the road with a steep shoulder (like consistently running against traffic), wearing an inappropriate type of running shoes (not enough cushion/too much motion control), and running on hard surfaces. Runners who might get stress fractures are more likely to encounter problems who are more prone to shin splints, ignore their rest days and have a tendancy to run hard on light days, and add lots of hill training.
Personally, I believe that a Type-A personality combined with blind determination and a penchant for goal attainment is also a solid risk factor; however, this has never been tested in a randomized controlled clinical trial. The reality is that all distance runners have some measure of these traits or they wouldn’t think it is a good idea (much less fun) to train for a marathon. But that is why we follow a plan…with planned rest days…to protect ourselves from the innate desire to train more, run longer and “ensure success through greater effort.”
If you think you might have a stress fracture (pain worse with running, goes away with rest, maybe some swelling and/or bruising) get checked out. It is easy to fix when it first starts without too much lost training. If however you ignore that aching, sometimes throbbing, pain with each stride, you may find yourself in Kendra’s position: thinking of canceled hotel rooms and partial refunds. Instead, play it safe so you can be back on the road, dreaming of the finish chute, friends and family screaming encouragement, a new shiny medal hanging around your neck.

I’ll cut a long story short, i want to join the air force, i’m not as fit as i could be and want to start running. Seems simple enough, huh.

Erase the Endless Repeats Running through Your Head
It’s amazing to me that no matter how much I think I’ve done in life that there is always more to experience (and learn). And, I have also learned that life stagnates because I allow it to.
Even though we have brilliant resources inside each of us, we also may have habitual tendencies of the mind that play like endless tape loops, tendencies that cause us suffering of one kind or another. It can be a “snap” to get caught up in this play field, and begin a downward spiral into the vortex of latency, fear, and self pity. And each time it is allowed to happen, the climb out can be treacherous and exhausting.
So, why do this to ourselves? What is going on? The answer I discovered for myself may surprise you. “I was always waiting for the other shoe to drop”. And what I have since discovered (and the reality) is; “There is no such thing as the other shoe unless I choose to participate and thus create it”.
We sometimes become so accustomed to allowing our environment to “rain down” on us that every time we try to move forward we stop and wait for the “other shoe to drop”. This is not an uncommon feeling as many people remain so set in their situations that they fear what might occur if they move on with their lives.
Many of us have made that choice on a myriad of occasions inadvertently creating that “other shoe”. Think back to different experiences in your life where you were saddled with fear. Most of the time, we eventually got what it was that we desired, but there was such a struggle. The root of the “other shoe” belief is our belief that in order to get what we need, we have to struggle for it.
Many of us have a learned expectation to make things worse than they may need to be. We do this by focusing our attention, and the momentum it will build, upon what could go wrong. And the interesting thing is that the key to creating new solutions is completely dependent on where we decide to direct and focus our attention.
It’s not how “challenge free” a life can be, but how those challenges are managed that makes a life fulfilling. In other words it is about tuning into our current visual expectations and no longer allow what’s been our reality to render us powerless.
We all have habits of thought. These include things like: what we believe, what we’ve experienced and have come to believe as the only reality and the only way that things can happen.
You already know that the performance of athletes improves dramatically with the power of visualization. It’s not rocket-science. You eventually become your what you focus on.
- If you continue to smoke a lot you become a smoker. - If you continue to drink a lot you become a drinker. - If you only watch TV all the time you’ll be a TV “drone”.
And…if you do something constructive, positive, and tangible in your life on a consistent basis you will be…

“What if Beethoven had never played again after he encountered his first piano?” and “What if I had never decided to move to Philadelphia after college, and instead moved back to my hometown because this is what felt comfortable. It isn’t however just the big things that we need to encounter and experiment with but the little details are equally important; things like finding the “perfect” pair of sandals or how many hours of sleep is just right for us.
How easily we can assume that we are just a particular way or that we are sentenced to live a certain way forgetting that we can shuffle the deck, juggle the balls, or switch horses mid-course. How often do we give up on ourselves (or another human being) assuming we have tried “everything” when the next combination or new possibility is just waiting for us to notice it?
Our “habits” can ensnare us in a straitjacket of comfort, reassuring us that we know what we like, and/or we know who we are. It isn’t that we just need to “stay open” or “try new things”. It is much more critical than that. We have an instinctive desire to keep discovering until the day we die all the possible ways to do and to be.
So, instead of waiting or worrying that there will be nothing at the “end of the rainbow”, start making plans for your next dream so that you can achieve the life you desire. Don’t just hang around in hopes that something better will come along, go out and find that something better, and take it!
Life is an enormous pu-pu platter, a giant offering of possibilities, and it is up to us to keep sampling the delicious tidbits until we find the ones that make us dance on the table with satisfaction and exultation.
I am running track for my junior high, and I am a sprinter mainly, maybe a 400m (I dont enjoy running it but I’m pretty good at it), and maybe long jump (not very good but I’m trying).
So I’m mainly looking for sprinting shoes. Any suggestions? I don’t want to buy them online so….
