Aging Baby Boomers and Injuries

After the Second World War, upon the return of the American soldiers back to their homes, there had been an unprecedented population explosion between the years 1946 and 1964. The epoch was coined the baby boomer generation. This generation had marked outstanding achievements in almost every aspect of living. They also made significant contributions in in many fields.

For these reasons, baby boomers had been the popular subject of studies and surveys. Baby boomers are enthusiastic and active community of people who are known for being independent. However, the baby boomers are currently entering the inevitable phase of old age. They now range from forty-two to sixty years of age.

Nevertheless, the baby boomers are still the generation that imparts the virtues of labor and being active. And to act what they had just preached, baby boomers have been found to be obsessed with exercising. It is because exercise and sports are the simplest way to stay active and to slow down the aging process. Unfortunately, the baby boomers are not exempted to the rule of “too much for something”. Now, the term “boomeritis” was coined to signify the consequence of devouring too much on exercise.

Reports of the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics show that the boomers’ injuries had caused 488 million hours of labor for health practitioners in the past year. The year 2005 recorded over a million injuries which resulted to 365 thousand visits to hospitals. And an estimated nineteen billion dollars were spent for health management of the baby boomers the past year.

Particularly in Windsor, Ontario the baby boomers at the age of 50 still push their bodies hard to exercise. This resulted to tendonitis, arthritis in knees and hips, bursitis and other traumatic health conditions. The popular reason for visiting the doctors was due to colds, but for baby boomers it is the wear and tear injuries.

In Windsor, Ontario Canada, knee replacements hiked to fifty percent since 1995 until 2000. Presently, there are additional centers to perform knee operations to address the needs of the aging baby boomers who are suffering from these injuries.

To avoid undergoing repeated operations due to injuries, the following are some pointers for aging baby boomers who are advocates of the active lifestyle.

The primary rule is to choose the apt exercise according to your health condition. For the aged boomers, jogging can be very exhausting to their joints compared to swimming and walking. It is because jogging involves severe pressure especially on the knees. When doing an exercise or engaging to sports, it is important to listen to your body. When the body starts to experience pains, it is a way of telling you to ease off.

Exercise is not forbidden for aging baby boomers, in fact it is recommended to be part of their everyday routine. On the other hand, moderation is advised. Baby boomers are devoted to their sports in their younger years. But even so, the activities that you used to accomplish effortlessly may need some modifications already. It is because even athletes experience wear and tear of bones and tissues.

To enhance the production of healthy collagens, which are responsible for the cartilage, you must be properly nourished with vitamin C. Citrus fruits are rich in vitamin C. Moreover, healthy foods will equip you with the needed nutrients to sustain your activities.

Another helpful tip for aging baby boomers is to perform warm up exercises first before engaging to vigorous ones. Proper stretching of muscles for at least three minutes will do. This will help avoid breaking the bones and undergoing artificial implants.
Use only the proper equipment such as proper shoes, gears and gadgets. These things can either give you a good workout or a bad injury. Also, follow the proper techniques of the sports and activities that you do.

When you are undergoing a fitness program, it will be helpful to make variations. The combination of the different kinds of exercises such as aerobic activities combined with strength training will make the bones stronger and more flexible.

Despite the adversities of aging, baby boomers are still playing the role of being the active generation. And up to date, they pursue that reputation.

The Differences Between Training And Running Shoes

Many of us without any professional guidance are prone to mix running shoes with training shoes. We always treat simple walking shoes, sneakers, gym shoes, running shoes and training shoes as the same footwear that they share lots of similar characteristics. In fact, they are differing from many aspects.

Training shoes and running shoes are two kinds of shoes designed for different usage; their different from appearance to structure are showing the different usage of them.

With your two hands holding these two kinds of shoes, you would know the first big difference clearly—the weight. Most training shoes are heavier than running shoes, so they are not suitable for continuous running. Running shoes is lightweight. They are required to be as light as possible for they are designed for prolonged or regular running, they offer cushioning systems, climate control features, stability features and materials designed to absorb the pounding of increased mileage. It provides more cushioning and flexibility to the foot during running events as opposed to regular training shoes. This characteristic aids in shock absorption, especially during impact against the ground.

Training shoes are perhaps the most versatile of all athletic shoes. They are designed for the casual runner. They offer support and cushioning, but are not made to take the pounding of long distance training. If you are just heading to the gym to put in two or three miles on a treadmill, then a training shoe is ok.

Running shoes are designed for forward movements so that they have thicker heels and are more flexible at the toe region. The soles can give an upward curve to the shop tip.

Another differ is that, running shoes always have intricate treads that help with moving or running forward. With this design, energy is properly channeled from the legs of the runner to his feet, and towards the running aisle.

There lie many sciences in these two kinds of shoes which help to make the sports easier and make the players more comfortable in the process of playing sports.

Only when you choose the right kind of shoes for your sports, you can enjoy the advantages that they bring to you and you will be able to perform better.

Top 10 Reasons To Start Running

Do you think about going running but never get round to it?  Are you one of those people who looks at their sparkling new trainers, but can’t find the motivation to put them on get out on the road?

Then read this Top 10 list of reasons to start running and you’ll wonder why you didn’t get started sooner!…

1. Running is a top calorie-burning exercise. Every mile you run burns roughly 100 calories and even after a 30-minute run your metabolism remains elevated for up to 2 hours!

2. Fresh air and exercise have the ultimate feel-good factor – a 20-minute light jog will lighten your mood and give you a mental and physical pick-me-up. Regular running will give your self-esteem and confidence a well-deserved boost.

3. No fancy kit or equipment is required. A good pair of running shoes is all you need to get started – once you’ve been bitten by the running bug, set yourself some short-term goals and reward yourself with a new piece of gear each time you achieve them.

4. Running is good for your health. Runners have stronger bones, lungs and reduced risk of heart disease. Running also boosts your immunity and your energy levels.

5. It doesn’t have to be fast! A popular misconception is that to run ‘properly’ you have to have a pounding heart, lungs fit to burst and a face the colour of beetroot! Running doesn’t automatically mean being constantly out of breath – slow and steady is the key to progress. A good indicator of a moderate pace is whether you can talk while running. As you build up strength your ‘talking pace’ will quicken accordingly.

6. See your local area from a different perspective. Running gives you the opportunity to explore your surroundings – both on and off-road.

7. Running can help you look younger for longer! How? By preventing the muscle and bone loss which can lead to osteoporosis. Plus, your skin will glow with an inner and outer radiance!

8. Running puts you in tune with your body – every stride brings into focus exactly how well/strong/fit you are feeling, from your head all the way down to your toes!

9. Running sets you free! When you are tired and stressed after a bad day at work or at home, dealing with the demands and strains of everyday life, there is nothing like pulling on your trainers and setting off on a run to give you a feeling of freedom. For however long you are out, it’s all about you and no one else.

10. Running is fun! Running in a group is more likely to keep you going further, faster and for longer – there’s nothing like a good natter to help the miles pass by!

The simple way to Buy the Suitable Running and Athletic Shoes

If you have many pairs of jogging shoes or other sports shoes chances are that when you bought them comfort and style were your main selection standards. However consider that about twenty-five p.c of runners need some type of specialized shoe that’s linked to their foot type, you may gain advantage from knowing your foot type before you buy your next pair of running shoes. Runner’s Feet come in all sizes and shapes, but their structure tends to get grouped into the following categories.

Common Foot Types

Flat Feet
Your foot is flat if you haven’t any obvious arch and your footprint is totally visible with no inward curve between the big toe and heel.

High Arches
High arches are straightforward to spot. There’s a clear arch between the heel and the ball of the foot. If your footprint has an enormous curve with a skinny outer edge, or perhaps an honest to goodness opening between the ball and the heel, you have a high arch.

Neutral Foot Type
A neutral foot type is neither flat-footed or high-arched. Your footprint will have a small inward curve of not more than an inch.

Overpronators
Overpronators have a tendency to roll inward from heel strike to take off during each walk. Those who pronate frequently need steadier running shoes.

Supinators
Supinators tend to roll outward from heel strike to take off during each walk and need a flexible, cushioned shoe to absorb road shock while running.

the best way to identify Your Foot Type
To identify your foot type you can do the footprint test and have a look at the the outline of your foot shape. For more images see www.about.com’s running guide which offers a great visible guide for judging your foot type with the footprint test.

To figure out your foot type at home, you can have a look at the bottoms of your current trainers. The location of the wear can tell you whether you land on the heels, roll in or out or have a neutral foot strike.

You can also visit a local running shoe store and talk with the running professionals. Most running stores now offer foot type analysis where you run across a computerized surface or run on a machine while they video tape your foot motion during running.

Next, put your shoes on a level surface and view them from behind. If the wear is on the exterior of the heels, you could be a supinator, and roll to the outside. This is even much more likely if you have high arches. In this situation, you may gain advantage from shoes that have good cushioning and shock assimilation. If the wear is on the inside of the heels, you likely need a steadier shoe to keep from pronating, or rolling inward as you run.

The Five Shoe Types
There are basically five different shoe types and what you buy will depend upon your foot type and training wishes

Stability Shoes
A good blend of cushioning, support and durability. Buy these shoes if you are of average weight and do not have any severe pronation or supination, but do need support and good durability.

Motion-Control Shoes
These are the most rigid, durable, control-oriented trainers that reduce overpronation. Choose these shoes if you overpronate, you wear orthotics and wish to have a stable shoe, or you have flat feet.

Light-weight coaching Shoes
The lightest of the coaching shoes designed for fast paced coaching or racing. Purchase these shoes if you haven’t any motion-control Problems and are a fast, efficient runner.

Cushioned Shoes
The most cushioned shoes with the least support. Purchase these shoes if you underpronate, have a stiff foot ( high arch ) and don’t need any extra support.

Trail Shoes
These shoes offer the best traction, with both stability and durability. Select these shoes if you run off-road or in inclement weather and need additional traction, harder uppers and a thicker soled shoe.

How does one increase pronation (in other words, stop supination) of the foot when walking/running?

Help! My feet supinate too much! (that means instead of rolling in and putting pressure on the arch, they roll out and put pressure on the outer foot and metatarsals!) I have a very high arch. I researched shoes thoroughly and determined through a mix of online reviews & wearing different sneakers around the house that the Asics Gen Nimbus VIII was the best. Now, after only a few weeks, the pain in the outside of my foot is as bad as ever. Does anyone know how to improve this? Also what insoles, etc would be good? Please help. Thanks!

You are correct that the Nimbus is a very good pair of shoes for runners with high arches. Often, wearing these shoes are enough, but that is not always the case, as you obviously found out. To supplement the shoes, you can wear insoles that support your arches. Superfeet is a great producer of insoles, and many of my running buddies have had great success with them. You can find them at your local specialty running shoe store or at their website (see link below). The ones you need are the green ones.

If the regular insoles are still insufficient, then the next course of action is to contact a specialist who will prescribe a pair custom orthotics, which are specially made to support your arches. These can be quite expensive, but I don’t think I have ever heard of anyone who needed further help.

Good luck~!

Terms You Should Know When Buying a New Balance Shoe

Midsole:
1.  ACTEVA Midsole.  Note the “EVA” in the word “ACTEVA”.  That’s right.  ACTEVA simply means a special kind of EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) midsole.  EVA is popular because it is lightweight and offers more “bounce” than polyurethane midsoles.  (You can think of each EVA midsole as being made up of thousands of EVA bubbles.)  The ACTEVA is supposed to be a special kind of EVA midsole because its low density and consistency in “bubble” size reduces compression set, i.e., a fancy term for when your running shoes go flat and lose their bounce.  ACTEVA midsoles by New Balance come in Lite and Ultra Lite.
2.  Encap.  A core of EVA inside a shell of polyurethane.  This material is designed to promote stability, disperse shock and help the shock absorption properties of the material last longer.
3.  Nvent.  This is New Balance’s system for midsole ventilation.  It is designed to keep the feet cool and dry.

Shock Absorption:
1.  Abzorb®.  If you want cushioning that specifically targets the heel and forefoot, then you want New Balance shoes designed with Abzorb®.  Made from a blend of isoprene rubber, Abzorb® is designed to protect the foot as it strikes the ground and resist compression set.
2.  Absorb® Ex.  This shock absorption material is made from a combination of Abzorb foam and a pocket of non-pressurized air trapped inside a thermoplastic bubble.

Arch Support:
1. Stability Web®.  Stability Web is a type of lightweight arch support designed to prevent too much flexion in the arch area while maintaining flexibility in the forefoot.  It is made of thermoplastic urethane.

Motion Control
1.  Graphite Rollbar®.  The Graphite Rollbar is a lightweight piece of graphite material that you can find in the heel area of certain New Balance running shoes.  It is designed to prevent over pronation and promote foot stability.  The Graphite Rollbar is perhaps New Balance’s most important motion control feature.
2.  Medial Post.  The Medial Post can extend from the heel to the ball of the foot (although lengths vary with the design of the shoe).  This high-density material is designed to provide pronation control.

Outsole:
1.  Flex Grooves.  Grooves in the sole of the shoe that enable the foot to roll smoothly through its naturally gait.  This technology promotes forefoot flexibility.
2.  Tru-Trak.  “Multi-directional” tread designed to maximize traction.
3.  Walking Strike Path.  Outsole design used “to guide” the foot through its natural gait.
4.  Ndurance.  Extremely hard and durable rubber compound used in the high impact areas of the shoe, such as the heel.  This material is designed to make your New Balance sneakers last longer.

I need a pair of shoes?

i need a pair of shoes for when school starts back, i would like something comfortable and sporty, like running shoes

i was thinking nike shox or the adidas bounce?

or what about the new under armour shoes?
im willing to spend about 60-120$ on them.

You should go try things on in a store with a professional and go first and foremost on what feels right and works for you. They’re also going to need to assess your particular feet and if you need shoes that have various support structures, etc.

You generally shouldn’t blindly stick with what you think is a “cool” brand or just looks “cool.”

You may also find that running shoes are just that — running shoes. Some can have a bit of a forward tilt / raised heel that doesn’t make them very comfortable for walking around.

Go to the store, have an open mind, and try things on. You can’t really know what’s good for you until they’re actually on your feet.

Running Tips: Marathon Race Day

When you are training for running marathons or other long running events, it is important to plan for not only your daily and weekly training regiments, but also prepare for the race day itself. Here are some tips for running on the big day:

-Pre-race meal: Because your body will be burning between 500 and 1,000 calories per hour, it is important to give your body nutrients before the marathon. A good meal tends to contain mainly carbohydrates, water, and electrolyte replacements, but some runners prefer a more carbohydrate-protein balanced meal.

-Equipment: People who are running marathons generally have good, supportive running shoes already. However, don’t forget the rest of your running clothes. Seams in shorts, socks, and shirts can cause uncomfortable chafing over the course of three or four hours. It is also a good idea to have an anti-friction product and protection for thighs and chests. Another small but important running tip: Carry a few bandages to take care of any blisters or scrapes you might incur on the road!

-Stay warm: Keep your muscles warm by bringing warm clothes and a throw-away blanket to the starting line. Begin your warm-up about 30 minutes before the race and don’t be afraid to use the first mile as the completion of your warm-up.

-Start slowly: Have a plan for the pace that you can maintain for the race and stick to it. Try not to worry about what other runners are doing during the race. You may find it helpful to wear a speed/distance monitor.

-Liquids: Drink at every water stop whether you are thirsty or not. Make sure to mix in some electrolyte replacements- water without electrolytes is more harm than good to your muscles!

-Nutrients: Find out before the race what you can stomach while running. Energy replacement bars and gels can be a good idea, but some runners will pack and carry other foods. Make running and eating part of your regular training- not just a race day event!

-At the finish line: Keep moving even after you have crossed the finish line. Walk and give your body time to cool down. Begin replacing nutrients and liquids as soon as possible. Some runners soak their legs in cool water for 10 to 20 minutes after the race.

-Stay positive and enjoy the race! A positive attitude can be the difference between a good race and a disaster!

Most of these marathon running tips are easily done if you take the time to make a plan of action well before race day. You’ve trained hard- make race day a fun and rewarding success!

I have really flat feet…what are the best running shoes that I can buy, while remaining affordable?

I just finished running my first 10k in the Akron marathon and my feet are hurting a lot. I wore poor shoes, I know, but I have a feeling that if I decide to continue running these distances, I’ll have to not only get a good pair of shoes, but ones that help my flat feet issue.

It seems like you are getting some wrong advice, not only here, but also on your 3 lb of beef that you defrosted, then refroze. The others were wrong there, at least based on what I learned growing up. Most home freezers are not cold enough to actually stop the growth of bacteria. However, I was surprised to find out from the USDA website at http://www.fsis.usda.gov/Fact_Sheets/Focus_On_Freezing/index.asp that it is ok to refreeze raw meat, because I always heard this was very risky. Take it from me, food poisoning is no fun. Next time you’re better off cutting it into manageable pieces while it is still raw before you freeze it.

OK, now on to the topic at hand. :-) First of all, congratulations for completing your first 10K!

I don’t mean to contradict the advice you already got here, because part of it was accurate, namely the quote “People with flat feet are most likely severe pronators. Which means you should get more support in your shoes.”

However, the part that said: “People with flat feet naturally do not adsorb shocks well” is incorrect, because actually the flat, pronating foot absorbs stress the best of any foot type–in fact, it absorbs stress *too well,” because a flat foot does not bounce back as well from the energy that goes into your footstrike, which causes you to expend more energy to get your foot off the ground than a similar guy with an arched foot. The Wikipedia.org article on flat feet refers to a study that showed flat feet were able to absorb stress well enough that flat feet were found to be less injured than high-arched feet, which are less flexible. Therefore, rather than looking for a soft cushy shoe to insulate yourself from stress, you would be better off with what’s known as a stability shoe if you are not too heavy, or a motion control shoe if you are a heavy guy or if your flatfoot pronation is to an extreme degree. I hear you when you say you have really flat feet, but it would help to know more about how flatfooted you are; is your foot flat even at rest, or does your arch flatten out when you stand on it, like most flat feet?

Asics does make some good shoes specifically for flatfooters, as does New Balance, Brooks and others. If you read more on foot/leg biomechanics, you’ll have a better understanding (and you can write me, too, if you like if you have any specific questions).

You would probably benefit from going to a good local athletic shoe store oriented to runners, so they can evaluate your own particular case of flatfoot. Be sure to bring an old pair of shoes you’ve been running in, because a good shoe salesman will be able to tell a lot about your own stride and footstrike, based on the wear patterns on your old running shoes. A really good store like this will look at you while walking and running–some of them even videotape you so you can see for yourself how your foot hits the ground when you are running. The more you can understand about your own situation, the better.

I always think it’s better to support your local running shoe store, but once you figure out which shoes are best for your own unique flatfoot condition, you could scout the internet to find replacement shoes at the best price. Be sure to check out the shoe manufacturers’ web sites directly, because every year there are new models, and also because they often have a description of specific shoe models you’ll see being closed out, like at Big 5 stores (where even their best salesmen may not be well informed about shoes for arched versus flat feet). I would personally tend to not have a problem buying last year’s models, which are usually slashed in price, because the human foot hasn’t changed that much since last year. :-)

Take good care of your feet, it’s important! And feel free to write me if you have any questions. Good luck!

How Many People Want to be Runners?

In terms of keeping in shape, the runners have it the easiest. They don’t need any special equipment. They aren’t required to purchase expensive memberships to any special runner’s club. All runners’ need is to put on some comfortable shoes (with the proper support of course) and set out! They can run no matter what the weather.

So what if you have always wanted to be a runner but aren’t sure how to get started? Or you’ve tried being a runner but your first jog left you feeling so terrible that you vowed you wouldn’t even walk briskly anymore? Luckily there are several programs that you can follow to turn yourself into a runner. My favorite is the Couch to 5K.

The Couch to 5K program is a program that was developed by running experts who advocate gently and gradually increasing the time you spend running over the course of several weeks. The basic idea is to spend twenty minutes either outdoors or on a treadmill. During those twenty minutes you alternate between a brisk walk and a comfortable jogging pace. Runners who choose to follow this program can choose to increase their running stamina by time or by distance. Each week runners increase the time (or distance) that they run and gradually decrease the time (and distance) that they walk. After several weeks runners will be able to run for the entire twenty minute session.

Another way for runners to build up the muscles in their legs is to do the ten thousand steps program. This program is relatively easy, all runners have to do is increase the amount of steps they take to ten thousand. Those steps can be walked, ran or even skipped. Of course, if you work in a job that makes you sit still, finding ways to get up to ten thousand steps a day can be quite challenging!

Finally, some last advice for runners who are just starting out. Here are a few tips to incorporate as you build your strength and stamina:

1. It takes a while for the endorphins to kick in. In fact, don’t expect them to kick in until after you’ve finished your first few runs. The runner’s high often happens in the last stretches of a jog and for a while after the run has been complete. In the beginning you’ll feel like you are about to die. That’s normal.

2. Push yourself, but don’t push too hard. Don’t coddle yourself either. As runners build strength and stamina, they all have days and sessions that make them feel bad—pain in the legs, rough breathing, etc. The only way to increase your stamina and strength is to push through those feelings.

3. You will not become a runner faster if you run with weights in your hands. In fact, running while carrying just about anything is dangerous and can lead to serious injuries. Your hands need to be open and relaxed as you run. This way you will be able to steady yourself if you lose your footing or fall.

How many pairs of shoes should a guy have?

Been doing some major cleaning out since I’m moving to a new place on the other side of town here in about 6 weeks.

So heres the deal, I got way too many shoes. I need to ditch some but trying to decide which.

2 pairs of Asics runners: One is for jogging and one pair is my work shoes.

2 pairs of bass loafers

I pair of Sperry boat shoes

3 pairs of Sandals: Adidas slides,Sketchers leather thongs, and a pair of cheapo flip flops.

3 pairs of Cowboy boots and 1 pair of Dickie’s Work boots.

1 pair of way worn Birkenstock clogs.

1 pair of black Sketchers oxfords

Not sure how I got so many but I think I need to slim down since half of them dont get worn that much.

You can’t have too many shoes! If you don’t like a couple pairs, then it would be good to give them to charity if they are in good condition. If you still wear the shoes then just keep them, whats the harm?

Running Shoes Vs Barefoot

Nike Women's Nike Free Run+ Running Shoes

Nike Women’s Nike Free Run+ Running Shoes

$84.95

The Women’s Nike Free Run+ Running Shoes from Nike is a trainer that emphasizes natural foot movement while delivering an extraordinary feel, combined with cushioning, traction and underfoot protection. This shoe strength-trains your legs and feet by imitating barefoot movement, and studies suggest that barefoot runners develop stronger feet. This running shoe encourages natural motion, which builds strength, and strength means speed. But first you’ll need to build your muscles, because NikeFree takes some getting used to. Deep cuts in the outsole enhance the foot’s flexibility and stability, while its full bootie designed gives you a barefoot like customized fit. The lightweight mesh upper of the Nike Free Run+ features minimal seaming that offers support and encourages your toes to flex and grip naturally; engaging muscles normally neglected in traditional footwear.

Barefoot Training vs Shoes

Mel Siff at health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Supertraining/ gives his thoughts on the trend of barefoot training vs shoes – compelling reading!

In view of all the comments on the use of shoes in sport, here are some

extracts from our “Supertraining” book (Siff & Verkhoshansky 1999 Ch 8) that

are relevant to the discussion.

Later I have provided a collection of websites that will also shed some more

light on this issue.

SHOES AND SAFETY

Shoe manufacturers would have athletes believe that the primary solution to

most athletic injuries is the wearing of expensive footwear. Ailments such as

shin splints, iliotibial band syndrome and peripatellar pain are attributed

variously to excessive shock loading of the limbs, pronation or supination.

Research, however, reveals that fewer injuries occur among those who wear

thin soled shoes and that current athletic footwear may even be injurious

(Robbins et al, 1988). The paradoxical observation of a much lower incidence

of running injuries reported in barefoot populations implies that modern

running shoes may produce injuries that normally would not occur without

their use (Robbins & Hanna, 1987). Furthermore, running shoes seem to be

associated with fewer injuries in fitness classes than so-called ‘aerobics

shoes’. Nigg (1986) reports that, on firm shock absorbing mats, the

difference in heel strike force is minimal between bare feet, thick-soled

shoes and thin-soled shoes. Nigg also points out that the use of any shoe

usually increases the tendency of the foot to pronate, particularly if the

impact forces are smaller.

Moreover, several studies have shown that there is no correlation between the

amount of shoe cushioning and impact absorption by footwear during locomotion

(Robbins et al, 1988; Clarke et al, 1982). Similarly, epidemiological

studies have failed to provide evidence that expensive modern athletic

footwear enhances protection from injury to the lower extremities (Caspersen

et al, 1984; Powell et al, 1986). Thus, it would appear that safety of the

lower extremity is not simply a consequence of suitable footwear, but of

learning how to move the body efficiently while wearing a specific type of

shoe.

SHOE DESIGN

Clearly, the science of athletic shoe design is far from being exact. For inst

ance, the current fo-cus is on foot pronation. Other possible causes of

injury such as toe, ankle, knee and hip movement in three dimensions are

largely neglected. Moreover, footwear design is based almost exclusively on

theoretical models which postulate that shock loading and the inability of

the human anatomy to adapt to this loading are the primary causes of running

injuries. This becomes evident from the claims of manufacturers that their

specific shoes correct excessive pronation, control the rearfoot, offer

superior arch support or absorb shock effectively. These shoes do not modify

the impact forces during locomotion, a fact which casts severe doubt on the

cushioning philosophy that forms the foundation of all current shoe design.

Studies by Robbins et al (1988) have shown that the sole of the bare foot

exhibits a powerful plantar surface protective response which diminishes

plantar loading on ground contact, thereby reducing the risk of damage from

overloading during locomotion. Their work also revealed that this response

was not apparent among subjects who always wear shoes, especially the highly

shock-absorbing shoes generally worn by runners. They concluded this

protective response prevents injury by decreasing system rigidity, thereby

diminishing the peak force during foot impact. The lack of the protective

response among shoe wearers apparently is due to diminished plantar sensory

feedback, possibly combined with mechanical interference with arch deflection

by shoe laces, heel counters and arch supports (Robbins et al, 1988). It

would seem that sufficient regular locomotor activity without footwear should

be done daily to maintain the sensitivity of the plantar protective reflex

and that less emphasis should be concentrated on designing passive

shock-absorbing or pronation-modifying shoes.

Little work has been done on relating lower limb injury to anthropometric

factors such as bodymass, height or limb length, or other factors including

level of qualification, movement intensity, muscle fibre distribution,

patterns of EMG activity, feedback processes or bone density. No research

has examined aerobics or ‘cross training’ shoes with this degree of

thoroughness, nor has it carried out entirely satisfactory three-dimensional

studies of all physical factors influencing the efficiency of whole body

movement from initiation to termination of a locomotor action, in particular

with respect to the optimal design of any shoe.

Irrespective of how well designed shoes are, they must be used correctly in

different move-ments. In doing so the user must be aware that shoes always

reduce the proprioceptive and tactile sensitivity to the surface on which

they are being used.

Another reflex is also worthy of attention. Forces exerted on the shoe are

delayed in being transmitted through its shock absorbing sole en route to the

foot. The reflex positive supporting reaction (see 3.5.3), which normally

operates highly effi-ciently in bare feet to produce strong reflex extension

of the legs and stabilisation of the body, is delayed in facilitating rapid

cybernetic control and correction of unsafe movements when shoes are worn.

In particular, the locus of application of pres-sure to the surface of the

sole of the foot determines the position to which the limb will extend

(Guyton, 1984), so that inappropriate geometry of the shoe can significantly

alter the pattern of recruitment of the muscles of the lower extremities.

In contrast, the use of bare feet on firm, very high density chip-foam mats

in the average fitness class preserves proprioceptive efficiency, lowers the

centre of gravity of the body and, unlike shoes, does not increase the lever

arm length from the point of heel contact to the ankle joint, thereby

reducing the moments of force about all joints of the lower limb.

If anyone is interested in the biomechanics of shoe design and use, the

following book is very informative:

Help if your like a professional runner :D thanks!?

alright so i know its better for your joints and all to run on sand instead of concrete but i was wondering just how much of a calorie booster runing on sand is vs. concrete? and also would it be better to run barefoot or with shoes?

According to this article, the best surface is asphalt, sand is considered too soft a surface. Read the article, it rates the surfaces.

Is it the shoes? It’s gotta be the shoes.
