to that end, New Balance makes a nice, breatheable shoe for trail running (708, 800) … also Vasque makes a good trail shoe, depends on if you need extra width (NB has EE and 4E) … You might steer clear of beefy trail shoes since you don’t need all that protection. But if you are training for a Western race, you’ll need the added toe protection of the Vasque .. NB has virtually no toe protection.

When you’re a start-up business with a shoe-string budget, that photocopied sheet with a simple list of your dishes was enough to get by. But as your business grows and becomes more successful, the time will eventually come when somebody says, “Isn’t it time we got a more professional-looking menu?”
Yes, indeed, a full-featured, laminated menu just like the big restaurants use will definitely be necessary in most cases, if your restaurant is to be taken seriously. Even if you don’t go for the large, laminated book-style folding menu, there are many alternative styles to choose from.
To get one thing out of the way right away: you are probably better off getting a professional graphics designer for this number. Designing a menu has many skills in common with designing a website, and your restaurant may not have somebody computer-savvy enough to figure out how to do it, let alone the artistic skill to make it look good!
But if you are up to the challenge, you will need: A computer with design and editing software, a separate graphics program, digital photos of servings, clip-art, and either a printer capable of high-resolution color printing or a print shop which will publish your design. If you hired a logo designer to brand-mark your signs and logos throughout your business, you’ll want your company’s logo on the menu as well. Oh, yes, and a spell-checker!
You’ll need to design a color scheme, come up with a style and theme, decide what sections the menu will include, and plan the layout. In addition to the main menu, you may want to create place-cards or table tents advertising seasonal specials and such. There are paper and publications standards in the printing industry, with standards designated as A4, A5, and so on, so check with the printing company who will be publishing your design.
This whole project doesn’t need to cost you an arm and a leg. Remember that simple, casual diners, coffee shops, cafes, and other small establishments do very good business without making a big production out of their menu. Here are some simpler design formats which almost anyone can learn to use:
HTML – Not many people think of it, but this is a document standard, after all. HTML, being the language of the World Wide Web, is capable of handling text in many sizes, layout formatting, and images. This is not recommended for fancy designs, but it can be enough to squeak by in some cases. Any web-page editing software can help you run up a layout. But there are some problems with this format: HTML can’t do custom fonts because they can’t display in your web browser, it isn’t good at keeping pages to a size standard, and is not powerful enough to handle more demanding layouts.
PDF – This is the most commonly used standard. The Portable Document Format is widely used for all purposes throughout the printing industry. A sophisticated PDF editor can design anything from a business card to a newspaper. It uses rigid page design and the editors for PDF have all of the standard sizes selectable from the menu. It can handle any font, image, and layout you throw at it, and is also likely to be preferred by the print shop. The only downside: PDF editors are expensive. Proprietary software patents have choked out most of the competition, resulting in a highly monopolized industry.
SVG, XML – This is the second most commonly encountered standard, and in fact much of the printing industry is starting to use this format more widely. They are each capable of the full set of PDF features, and even add some new tricks that PDF can’t do. SVG stands for “scalable vector graphics” and XML is the parent of HTML, being the original document mark-up language.
SVG and XML combine in the same document. SVG is not only a means of producing a document, but is a graphics language as well, so you can draw in it! Software for editing SVG and XML documents is widely available as free and open source software, and in every case the free software is at least 99% as powerful as the expensive commercial version. The only downside here is that it takes some extra learning to use and understand SVG and XML. For example, web browser have been able to render SVG and XML elements for years, and yet you don’t see much of it on the Internet, because there just aren’t that many people skilled enough to use it. You don’t exactly have to have a computer science degree – but it won’t hurt!
Whatever document format you use, you will have many considerations in planning your layout. If you use photographs, you will need to have a professional photographer to snap photos of your food and provide you with the images in digital format so you can include them in the menu. You will want to pick a font and layout consistent with your restaurant’s atmosphere and your business image.
You will want it to be attractive as possible, but not be so “busy” that it is difficult to read. And using clip-art is convenient and easy, but will make your design look like a tired cliche. Using custom-made graphics, on the other hand, will require digital graphics design skills that aren’t too common in the general public. You might also want to provide versions in different languages, and a braille menu for the visually impaired.
It is quite challenging for someone with little design experience to undertake this task; there is much more to design that is left out of this article. Remember that menus define your restaurant; it is the first product that your guests will get to see. Making a good impression here is important.

get up with a Visa/Mastercard merchants account. Others have
reported increases up to a whopping 100%, or even more!
If all of your sales are made by mail, you can expect to up your
total sales by at least 10%, and more likely 15% to 30% simply
by offering the credit card option. If you plan to use the
telephone a great deal as a marketing tool, offering a credit
card buying option could double or triple your sales.
Credit card buying is seductive. Many people like the option of
buying something today that they won’t have to pay for until
later. Also, most consumers tend to spend more using their

orders is a darn good idea. But how can you obtain credit card
merchants status? Truth is, it’s not always a piece of cake. In
recent years banks have been playing hard-ball with many
business people, especially anyone doing business by mail. It’s
the same old story, a handfull of mail order crooks have almost
totally screwed-up a good thing for honest dealers. The major
credit card companies have told the banks to be very, very
selective in issuing merchant accounts to mail order sellers and
home business operators.
Because a few scum-bags have ripped off some banks, and run off
with the money, your local friendly banker may not be too
“friendly” when you tell him you want a merchants account. It
has become increasingly more difficult for mail order sellers to
secure a merchants account, and if you only sell by mail, but
also do consider setting you up for Visa and Mastercard
processing. That happens to be reality…but always remember
WHERE THERE IS A WILL THERE MUST BE A WAY! In this special
valuable report I’m going to cover some of the best way to
obtain your merchant’s status.
THE BEST WAY TO OBTAIN YOUR MERCHANT ACCOUNT
Although your banker may have already told you that they
“cannot” accept you for a merchant account, the simple,
unvarnished truth is that he/she can. Visa and Mastercard do set
some rigid guidelines for their affiliated banks to follow, but
ultimately the banks must approve or disapprove each
application. Excuses concerning “doing business by mail”,
“operating a home-based business”, “not having a long business
track record”, are just that-excuses! A somewhat polite way to
tell you “no”!
Could a mail order businessman, (books, home-study courses,
etc.) but how also conducts his business exclusively in his home
get a Merchant Account? Fat chance of him getting a merchants
account. Right? Wrong: He happily processes credit card orders
for his customers will full knowledge and cooperation from his
bank. How did he do it? He never stopped asking for what he
wanted.
When his own bank refused to even consider him for a merchant
account, due to the fact that he was in mail order, and also
doing business from his home, he beat path to several other
banks.
The first four banks he visited also said “no”, (2 were large
institutions, 2 mid-size), so he decided to try some smaller
banks. Guess what? The very first bank he went to said “Maybe”.
They asked him to transfer his account to their bank, so that
they could “monitor” it for six months. He told the bank
official that he would consider their proposal, and the
proceeded to another small bank one block up the street.
He liked what the second small bank said. They said “Yes!” All
he needed to do was establish a checking account with them and
maintain a modest $1,000, business checking account balance.
This he quickly did!
He is not unique. But he was very persistent and kept asking for
what he wanted, and you must also. Probably th two best ways to
get a merchant account are: (1) Keep pestering your own bank
about granting you charge card privileges, until they agree to
do so.
(2) If your bank outright refuses, make a list of all banks in
your immediate area, putting some special attention on small
banks. Next, get out a pair of your most comfortable shoes and
get to it! Ask…Ask…Ask..Ask.. Ask! You have nothing to lose,
and much to gain by being persistent, and by constantly asking
for what you want (that’s good advice in all areas-business and
personal) of your life!
CREDIT CARD MERCHANT ALTERNATIVES
If you absolutely have no success in obtaining a merchants
account from a local bank, you should consider the alternatives.

Since making its way to the big stage Wicked has been awing audiences, and breaking box office records in theaters all around the world. The show has been around since 2003, and has been seen by more than 2 million individuals.
The music and play, written by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman, are based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Gregory Maguire. Wicked retelling of the classic children’s novel the Wizard of Oz from the perspective of Oz’s witches.
Wicked begins a long long time before Dorothy shows up. The story focuses on the relationship between Elphaba, who is better known as the Wicked Witch of the West, and her sister, Glinda, the Good Witch of the North. The musical tells the story of the witch’s relational struggles and even disagreements over a boy they both come to love. Additionally, the plot has a few throwbacks to the old film we’ve all fallen in love with
The first reference made to the original movie comes when the citizens of Oz gather to celebrate the passing of the Wicked Witch of the West. After it is confirmed that she had, indeed, died at the hands of Dorothy, the people of Oz want to know if the rumors about Glinda are true. When Glinda arrives, they ask her if she actually knew Elphaba. Glinda is reluctant to answer, although she acknowledges they had met back at the University.
The scene changes, as Glinda begins to recall the past. Elphaba’s mother, Melena, it is revealed, is cheating on her husband. Elphaba was born out of the infidelity. Her skin is an unnatural green hue which puts Frex, Melena’s husband,to shame
Eventually Frex and Melena have another daughter whom they name Nessarose who is born a cripple. Frex, who is still embarrassed by the still green Elphaba, adores his new daughter. When she is of age, Frex sends Nessarose and Elphaba (as Nessarose’s attendant) to Shiz University. As they depart, Frex imparts his favorite daughter with a pair of wonderful, you might even say magical, slippers.
When they get to Shiz, it isn’t long before Elphaba’s plans are forcefully changed. In a strange outburst, Elphaba uses magic, which surprises and delights madame Morrible. She compels Elphaba to enroll in the school’s curriculum specifically geared to students with magical abilities. In addition, while Elphaba had expected to be staying with her sister, she ends up rooming with Galinda, a stuck up, bratty, rich witch. Needless to say, they come to loathe one other.
Soon after beginning her education, Elphaba encounters a problem. In her class, Dr. Dillamond (a talking animal), discusses the strange fact that animals throughout the land of Oz are forgetting how to speak. This distresses Elphaba greatly. She feels powerless to help however. When one day, Dillamond is taken away because of bias against talking animals, all of that changes. When Dillamond is replaced, the first actions of his predecessor are to bring in a caged lion. Elphaba gets angry and rescues the lion. Subsequently, she vows to protect the animals of Oz.
Soon after, Elphaba and Galinda, who have since become friend, receive notice that they are to meet with the great Wizard. Galinda, at this time, changes her name to Glinda. Elphaba finds that the Wizard of Oz is powerless. She escapes the Wizard by jumping on a broomstick and using magic to make it fly.
Oz is stirring with the rumor that Elphaba could be killed by being dowsed with water. When Fiyero hears this nasty rumor, he storms off to find Elphaba. He leaves Glinda for the green witch, which baffles everyone.
Elphaba and Fiyero are together only for a short time though. When Elphaba hears that her sister might be in trouble she leaves right away only to find that her sister has been killed by a falling house (of all things). This is where the tale of the Wizard of Oz begins, as this home is the famous flying house that Dorothy arrived in. Elphaba steams with anger when she finds that Dorothy has stolen Nessa’s shoes (the ones that Frex gifted her before she went to Shiz).
At the end, Elphaba and Glinda meet for one final goodbye. They sing a little song, and the famous, final scene from the Wizard of Oz is reenacted. Elphaba is dowsed with water and “killed”. What is delightful to find is the grad twist. Elphaba was never killed. The green villain, it is shown, fell through a trap door.
