Best hiking shoes/boots/whatever for women?

I’m moving to a mountain area pretty soon and want to spend a lot of time hiking…I’ve never done more than a few hours though and always in sneakers. I want to invest in some good footwear for this but I’ve no idea what to get. I’ve heard trail running shoes are more comfortable than boots but that the latter have better ankle support. So any advice (especially from those with size 9 1/2 W feet) would be greatly appreciated!

footwear is always tricky. i would suggest waiting until you move, then check out the outdoors-type stores in the area. ask local hikers, store employees, etc., what they use. it’s going to depend heavily on the type of trails (rocky, well-maintained, overgrown, sandy?), how wet the area is, and the quirks of your own feet. for just day-hiking you really don’t need boots (and i don’t even wear boots for multi-day backpacking trips). see if you can find a shop with employees who have been trained in how to actually fit a shoe properly, and make sure they will accept returns on used footwear, in case they sell you a pair that make you bust out in blisters. the problem with most sneakers is that the the treads on the shoe tend to be very shallow, which doesn’t give them much grip on mountain trails. good luck!

Nice update on the 1220 series

I’ve got the last two of the 1220 series and find the 1225 much like the others. The shoe provides a blend of lot’s of support and lot’s of cushioning. I also like the fact that New Balance offers a size 15. So many of the different running shoes seem to run pretty small anymore and I’ve found that I have to keep going up to get a shoe that fits.

BuyingNew Balance Men’s The 1225 (Silver/Black 10.0 D)

Great stability shoes!!!!

Excellent for people with mild to over pronator feet like myself. I had the 1224 and were great too! but somewhat better the 1225, more cushioning and support! The only negative on these shoes: they wear quite fast (I run 40KM or 25Miles/week)… but the feeling while you run with these shoes doesn’t have a match (like walking on pillows)!!! I really recommend them!! better if you use them with the NB support insoles (sold separately).

CheapNew Balance Men’s The 1225 (Silver/Black 10.0 D)

Good shoe, comfortable, not super durable.

I ran in these for about 7 months before they really started to break down. They were great as far as fit and comfort, but being a bigger runner (6’2 and 240lbs), I think I just wore them out. I don’t expect to get a lifetime out of a pair of running shoes, but these fell apart a little quicker than I expected. They had good support and fit, just not longevity. I am switching to a pair of Brooks Beast’s, hopefully the extra weight will mean more durability.

NB1225 = best running shoe I’ve ever owned

I have wide feet and am 6′-4′, 240, so need lots of cushioning. I use these mainly for trail runs/light hiking and these blow away every other pair of shoes I have ever owned. Very light weight and breathable. Am buying several more pairs as I can’t believe how comfortable they are. Durability for trails isn’t the best (but I’m not complaining). NB makes great products and I’ve always loved their wide range of styles/sizes. As such, will remain a loyal buyer.

Highly recommended.

Pretty good…

These shoes seem to be pretty good. I haven’t worn them a lot yet, so we’ll see how they work over time.

Great shoes

These have been great shoes for me. I was also looking at the 993′s, but these fit my foot perfectly and are very light. I’ll probably buy another pair soon.

Perfect Balance

I have had the last two versions of the 1220 series and upgraded to the 1225′s. These are a great balance of cushioning and support. Great for heavier people or people that have hard steps. Was dealing with plantar fascitis for a bit after my long runs and the support and cushioning in these helped me get rid of it. Would definately recommend to all.

Great stability shoes right out of the box

I am extremely satisfied with the 1225′s. Right out of the box I found them extremely comfortable and ready to go. I took them out for a 7 mile run and thought they were great. Excellent cushioning, but not too soft and definitely not too hard on each footfall. I tend to suffer from shin splints and I think these shoes have helped me stabilize my gait and neutralize my shin splints. I also really like the styling (shoe laces do not come undone), color scheme and reflecting features (good for night running). I highly recommend them if you’re someone who needs a stability shoe or even if you are a mild to medium overpronator who needs a stable but not heavy shoe.

New Balance MR1225 – Great for diabetic feet!

The New Balance MR1222-1225 series were recommended by a foot doctor. I use them for walking, not running. They are very well made and last a long time. I am a diabetic and had painful plantar fasciitis. I went to several foot doctors, got injections, but the pain kept getting worse. These running shoes have made a huge difference. When paired with Spenco orthotic inserts and wigwam shocks (no painful seams), my feet feel great. I highly recommend them. Hope they help you, too.

What shoes, any brand, are best for long distance running?

I’m looking for a shoe that has good cushion & support, I do alot of long distance running, my weekly mileage is about 27 right now. I’ve tried the Brooks GT8 (which didn’t wear out so quickly but were quite bulky) and recently used a pair of Mizuno Wave Elixirs which have worn out VERY quickly. Thanks in advance.

Also, I run in trails most of the time but I also run on pavement so that versatlitiy is essential thanks y’all.

I find that the best way to find the right shoe fit and the right shoe for your routine is to go to a local shoe store and have the experts take a look at your feet. [Aardvark in PA is EXCELLENT] I know that might seem a bit weird – but some people actually can tell by the print you’ve left on your previous pair of shoes what kind of shoe is best for you. I love my Asics (they come in many different styles, so really, you should check out the experts at an athletics store- they can tell you what support your feet need for your distance/events)
I hope that was helpful.
Good luck!

need some good trail running shoes any suggestions?

I am 5’6 about 130 pounds and run an average of 30 miles a week. For my outside runs I am looking for a good pair of trail shoes. I ran in my asics 1120′s today and my feet are worse for the wear now. Way too light. The terrain here is broken asphault and with alot of uneven roads. I overpronate as well. I am looking at several pairs but would appreciate some accounts of some tried and true shoes. I am leaning towards asics and saucony’s, any pro’s or con’s for a particular model would be greatly appreciated!

Stay away from Sauconys, they have really small toe boxes and if worn continually they could cause blood blisters under your toenails (ouch). If you want to stay with Asics then get their trail running shoe. If your looking for something a little more rugged try MERRELL or THE NORTH FACE. They’re a little bit heavier then normal sneakers (about 18oz). They have a really tough outtersole making them good for trails and winter running. And most of them can be found with Gore-Tex, which a waterproof material making them good for keeping your feet dry during those sloppy winter months. Less of a trail shoe and more of a sneaker I would recommend trying a pair of Pearl Izumi SyncroSearch or SyncroShift. About the same as a normal sneaker but has a slightly tougher outtersole and gore-tex.

19 Tips on Running

The great thing with running, unlike many other sports, is that it’s very simple to objectively measure progress. How are you progressing? Or have you got yourself into a rut? We may not all be destined to become elite runners, but most of us feel pretty psyched when we see even small improvements. The older I get the more I look to small improvements for my motivation.

The following check list may help you pinpoint areas of nutrition, training, motivation, injury prevention, or equipment to address that will help boost you to the next level.

1.Fuel right before runs – have a low fat meal or snack containing low glycemic index carbohydrates 1-3 hours before your run. I personally like oatmeal mixed with Cheerios before my morning run.

2.Core strengthening – Pilates, yoga or simply core strengthening weight workouts. Personalized programs help to strengthen core and major muscle groups important to running, as well as lengthen out tight areas. A more fluid moving, stronger, less injury prone body is the result.

3.Cross-train – even the worlds’ fastest female marathoner-Paula Radcliffe-does some of her sessions on a Nordic track (a machine which mimics cross-country skiing). Aqua running, eliptical and cycling are also useful to maintain cardiovascular fitness without the constant impact and injury risk. I finally bought a bike a month ago and I love it!

4.Refine your running technique – Your podiatrist or physical therapist can help you with gait analysis. Improving technique can not only make you a better runner, but you may feel less soreness and reduced injuries.

5.Aim to be a healthy weight – a BMI (body mass index) of 20-25 gives us a rough indicator. Running becomes more difficult when we gain weight, conversely, becoming underweight may negatively affect performance and health. I can admit that I actually have gained weight and became faster!

6.Increase your stress gradually – the general rule of thumb is to increase your mileage no more than 10% weekly. This decreases the injury risk, and gives the body time to adapt to increased stress and improve.

7.Wear appropriate shoes – that are comfortable and functional for your foot type; and above all learn to recognize when they are past their expiration date to help avoid injury. Five hundred miles or 6 months are the expiration dates on running shoes!

8. Start runs hydrated – and carry sports drink or gels on runs that are longer than 60-90 mins. Losing even 2% of our body weight through sweat can affect performance. Providing carbohydrate and electrolytes during longer races, will also be a huge benefit to your final time. Weigh yourself before and after a run. Make sure you replace your fluids!

9. Run with a group – if you find it difficult to stay motivated, running with a group, or a running peep can give you a time and place to be consistent with your running.

10. Get in the zone – Load your mp3 with music that uplifts you. Buy run gear you feel great and comfortable in, or map out new run routes to stay inspired. Mix it up!

11. Find a great massage therapist – regular massage improves mobility and flexibility of the muscles, increases blood flow, and relaxes the muscle. All this means recovery from a hard session or race (normally 48-72 hrs) can be reduced by up to 50%! A good massage therapist can also pinpoint problem areas when they are tight and before they become injuries. I love mine although I scream when she hits my sore spots!

12. Learn to run faster – do 1-2 runs every week that challenge your pace. This may be an anaerobic threshold run where you hold a faster pace for eg 20mins during your normal run. Other options are hill fartlek sessions-where you run an undulating loop, pushing hard on the uphills-or interval sessions – where a shorter distance is run hard, with a few minutes of jogging between eg 5-6 x 1 mile or 6-8 x 800m.

13. Find a mentor or supporter – this may be someone you admire as a runner, or who makes you feel enthusiastic about your running goals. It may be your coach, partner, or another runner who you catch up with regularly to talk running and how it effects your life.

14. Set goals with training and racing and follow a program. Like anything in life, we are more likely to be successful with a clear vision and tactics.

15. Eat right after runs – consume a meal or snack containing 1-2g carbohydrate/kg of body weight and some protein immediately after runs longer than an hour. I personally drink an Ensure or protein shake as soon as I stop sweating! Glycogen (the muscles main energy source for running) is replaced much faster in this period immediately post training.

16. Utilize and learn to love ice-baths – or cool water soaks, especially after long or hard runs. The effect on recovery is amazing.

17. Race – there’s nothing like a race situation to push you to the next level, while also giving you a sense of accomplishment. It’s amazing how the legs find another gear to train at as well!

18. Learn to train easy – we are not invincible, and do not become great by running hard every day. In fact injury and chronic fatigue is the more likely outcome! Recovery runs or easy days are crucial to gain the benefits from our harder runs. Do a daily check…are you fatigued when you wake up? That’s a day to pull out your bike or run easier.

19. Enlist specialists – get professional advice when needed from qualified and respected Sports Podiatrists, Nutritionists, Physical Therapists, Sports Physicians, Chiropractors, Exercise Physiologists, Coaches, and even Sports Psychologists!

We are unique individuals, and one formula will not be right for everyone. It takes time to figure out what works best for us, but the important thing is that you learn from experience, and enjoy the process of becoming a better, stronger runner.

When should I replace my running shoes?

How do I know when is the appropriate time to replace my running shoes? Is it a certain number of miles? I’ve had mine for some time but they still feel comfortable and look ok.

We here at Fleet Feet Mahwah replace our own shoes after about 325 miles. It’s not unreasonable to expect a pair to last about 350-375 miles. If you average about 20-25 miles per week in your shoes, you would be postponing your purchase about a week to 10 days before reaching the 350-375 range. We don’t feel it’s worth chancing injury for such a small period of time! Bottom line is, listen to your body. If nothings changed with your running/walking routine, and all of a sudden, you feel pain in a running related area, it’s time for new kicks!

What athletic shoes should I get?

I need a pair of running shoes that I can use with trails in the woods, and on pavement. They can’t be much more than $30. I really like the Reebok Lasher, but they’re a bit out of my price range. If it helps, I’m a men’s size 10.

You should really try to see if you can get a good pair…running with worn out or bad quality shoes can get you injured. I’d go to a running store and ask them to help you out; they’ll be ale to have a look at the way you walk and recommend something right for you.
